Frami Books began quietly when my eldest son, Callum, wrote a book about being autistic. He was just 16 years old at the time, but wanted to share his story honestly, in his own words and chose not to seek a traditional publisher so that he could remain fully in control.
So I began learning all I could about self-publishing, and we started Frami Books together. I deal with the marketing and outreach, and Callum handles the design. He taught himself InDesign, Photoshop, photography, and editing with Premiere Pro, then studied dyslexia-friendly book production to ensure his work was accessible to as many readers as possible. He added notes pages after each chapter so people could reflect and write their own thoughts. That book, The Secrets of My Spectrum, found its way into homes, schools, and hearts across the UK and beyond, becoming a bestseller.
When readers began asking if he'd written anything with pictures, Callum asked me to help him create a couple of gentle, inclusive picture books. He wanted them to feel emotionally safe for autistic children, so we talked through the adult characters together, making sure they felt honest and respectful. He added a colouring page and a spot-the-difference activity at the end of each book, to help anxious children self-soothe. He also made sure the text was dyslexia-friendly, and we were lucky to work with illustrator Andrew Painter, who brought Daniel and his family to life with warmth and authenticity in Fireworks Night and On the Bus.
These days, Callum designs all our books, fixes the printer when it throws a tantrum, and sends out every signed copy with care. I focus on marketing and making sure our authors feel supported and safe. We've kept things small, personal, and emotionally grounded, because that's what feels right. Our family's lived experience touches every book, and every author we work with becomes part of that story.
When readers started asking about PDA, Callum gently encouraged his younger brother Ethan to share his lived experience, so he bravely wrote The PDA Effect, which has helped many families and teachers understand PDA from the inside. It became a bestseller too.
Alongside our advocacy titles, we also publish fantasy, including my own novel, Ariessy of Midgard. We believe imagination is just as vital as lived experience, and we welcome authors who would like self-publishing support to get in touch. Whether your story is rooted in truth, magic, or both, we'll help you bring it to life with care.
Frami Books is still run from home, with our favourite Earl Grey tea on hand, some bourbon biscuits, and our dog underfoot.
From formatting and design to marketing and outreach, we're here to guide you gently every step of the way. We're very proud to introduce our first publication by Luke Miller-Ball, Going Under the Radar, an adult autism and mental health memoir.
